- Eat healthier: START consuming more plant-based foods and more protein in the weeks before surgery and STOP consuming processed food that have empty calories and a high sugar content.
- Add vitamins and supplements in the weeks before surgery: We recommend Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin B and Zinc. These will help boost your immunity.
- Increase your consumption of anti-oxidants in the weeks before surgery. Blueberries and blackberries are an excellent source.
- Reduce alcohol consumption in the weeks before surgery.
- Try to lose some weight if you are above ideal body weight. Excess weight increases your risk of infection.
- Build muscle strength in your arms and legs. The stronger you are going into surgery, the stronger you will be coming out.
- Drink more water and less soda. Soda contains sugars and other chemicals that promote inflammation.
- Consume more foods rich in Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. These can also reduce inflammation. Cold water fish and walnuts are a great natural source.
- Try to sleep more in the weeks leading up to surgery. Sleep helps reduce stress and anxiety and promotes better healing.
- Try to stop using any prescription pain medications in the weeks prior to surgery. Building up a tolerance to these before surgery will make them less effective after surgery.
